Graduation as MD in 1979 and as PhD in 1997 at the Louvain Medical School, Brussels, Belgium.

Residency in general and thoracic surgery at the academic hospital of the Louvain Medical School, Brussels, Belgium (Professors Paul-Jacques Kestens and Jean-Bernard Otte), at the University of Paris, France (Professor Jean-Noël Maillard), and at the University of Caen, France (Professors Marc Gignoux and Philippe Ségol).

Complementary medical education at the Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska, USA, the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, USA (Professor Tom Demeester), and at the Toranomon hospital, Tokyo, Japan (Professor Hiroshi Akiyama).

Professor of Surgery, titular of the chair of Gastro-Esophageal and Laparoscopic Surgery at the Catholic University of Louvain, Brussels, Belgium.
