DIVERTICULUM OF THE ESOPHAGEAL BODY

Diverticulum of the esophageal body is a mucosal hernia through the muscle layers of the esophagus that may be associated to a motility disorder.

Only symptomatic diverticula (i.e regurgitation, dysphagia) must be operated on by excision of the pouch and division of the muscle layers of the esophageal body on the opposite side.

This operation is carried out by either thoracoscopy or conventional thoracotomy.
