Taking care of you and your health

Healthcare associated infections

You are in good hands here!

A recent Belgian study showed that 6 % of hospitalized patients develop an infection during their stay in a hospital. The situation in Belgium is entirely comparable to that in other European countries. Many infections cannot be avoided because they affect certain patients who are frail and sensible as a result of their illness. However, some infections can be avoided by means of good hand hygiene. Since 2004, we successfully participate in national hand-hygiene campaigns.

Promote hand hygiene in orders to avoid healthcare associated infections

You can also play an active role in preventing infections by collaborating with doctors, nursing and paramedic staffs during your treatment. Talk to the doctors, the nurses and the paramedical staff about the importance of hand-hygiene. Do not hesitate to ask them if they have disinfected their hands before your treatment. Indicate also how much you appreciate their disinfecting their hands. Finally you can yourself prevent the transmission of germs by washing your hands properly and regularly with soap and clean water after going to the bathroom and before meals. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough, sneeze or blow your nose. Immediately after use throw the tissue away and wash your hands.
